Local SEO

Show up in the map pack when people nearby search for what you do.

Overview

When someone searches for a contractor, a landscaper or a pool company, they usually call someone from the map pack. Where you land depends on your Google Business Profile, your reviews, your website's service and location pages, and how consistently your details appear across the web. It also changes from one street to the next, which a single rank check won't show you.

I test local SEO ideas on Forty Five Scapes, a landscape design-build company on Georgian Bay whose Webflow site I work on, before I use them for other clients. I track rankings with a geo-grid scanner I built. It checks where you rank across a grid of map points, then shows the results as a heatmap and a timelapse of how they change.

Who it's for

For trades and local service businesses that win work through calls, quote requests and visits. Local clients include AWPM Group in Mississauga, V.I.L. Landscaping in Oakville and P.S. Bakery in Collingwood.

  • You rank for your business name, but not for the services people search for.
  • You show up in the map pack near your shop, then disappear a few kilometres away.
  • Your Google Business Profile was set up once and hasn't been touched since.
  • You serve several towns, but your website lists them all on one page.
  • Competitors with more reviews outrank you, even where your work is better.
What you get
  • A local SEO audit of your Google Business Profile, website, citations and competitors
  • Geo-grid rank tracking across your service area, with heatmaps and a timelapse of changes
  • Google Business Profile optimization: categories, services, photos and posts
  • Service and location pages written for the towns you actually serve
  • Citation cleanup, so your name, address and phone number match everywhere
  • A simple routine for asking happy customers for reviews
  • LocalBusiness schema for your website
How it works
  1. Audit. I check your profile, site, citations and reviews, and run a geo-grid scan to see where you rank across your service area today.
  2. Fix the foundations. I clean up your Google Business Profile and citations, and add LocalBusiness schema to your site.
  3. Build pages. I write service and location pages for the work and the towns you want more of, and set up your review routine.
  4. Track. Repeat geo-grid scans show where rankings are growing and where competitors still win, so we know which area or service to work on next.

FAQ

Common questions

How is local SEO priced?

It starts with a fixed-price audit, so you know where you stand before you commit to anything ongoing. After that, you can choose an ongoing program covering profile updates, new pages, reviews and tracking, or a one-time setup that you run yourself. If your website itself is the problem, a new local business website may be the better first step.

How do you track map pack rankings?

With a geo-grid scanner I built. A normal rank check looks from one location, but map results change depending on where the searcher is standing. The scanner checks your ranking at every point on a grid across your service area and shows it as a heatmap. Its timelapse view shows how rankings shift over time, so you can see whether new pages and reviews are paying off, and where.

What do you need from me?

Manager access to your Google Business Profile, access to your website, and a list of the services and towns you want more work from. Good photos of real jobs help a lot. The most useful thing you can do is ask customers for reviews once the routine is set up, because nobody else can do that part for you.
